I am a long-time
resident of Durham, NC, along with my husband,
two children, and assortment of pets. I am
a member and
part-owner of the Hillsborough
Gallery of Arts in historic Hillsborough, NC. My
work also can be seen at the Bull City Art and Frame Company in
Durham's Brightleaf Square.
While most regularly an oil and acrylics painter, I like
to explore and play with
many different media, including watercolor, oils, acrylics, block
printing,
fiber arts, mosaics, and jewlery making.
I am
continually in search of
ways to bring together my many artistic passions and this has
led to some recent mixed media pieces, like paintings
with needlework and block prints, and paintings on
wood
panels with doors that open to reveal a surprise (see "Tree of
Life," left).
In my work I explore a variety of
themes: the beauty of everyday (and sometimes run-down) objects;
spirituality; myths, metaphors and symbols; the natural world; and
sense of place. Paintings can be whimsical, serene, or
serious. I
also am interested in playing with pattern, texture, layers, and depth
of field.
My
background in environmental science and my years of work with The
Nature
Conservancy informs my art and shows in my affinity
for landscapes, flowers, birds and other animals, and the rest of the
living world.
